General Resources and Guides

Web English Teacher

This terrific site is administered by an English teacher and provides annotated links to carefully selected sites in a wide range of categories for K-12 English and Language Arts curriculum. Includes grammar sites, sites on authors, poetry, Shakespeare, writing, and much more.

OWL at Purdue University

Purdue University has the most comprehensive OWLs (Online Writing Labs) on the Web and received over 23 million hits during the 2002-2003 academic year. The web site contains hypertext workshops and subject tutorials on writing various types of papers, teacher resources , huge collections of links to help users find information on the Internet, PowerPoint presentations about writing that can be downloaded for use in classes or individual study, and web pages that cover all aspects of writing. The Purdue OWL also contains a list of handouts organized by category and a list of interactive practice exercises. Topics include General Writing Concerns (Planning/Writing/Revising/Genres), Research and Documenting Sources, Punctuation, Capitalization and Spelling, Sentence Construction, Parts of Speech, English as a Second Language, Exercises/Answer Keys, and Professional Writing (and Writing in the Job Search). You can also receive their free Writing Lab Newsletter, which contains articles and information about tutoring.

Guide to Grammar & Writing

Guide to Grammar & Writing is an impressive interactive guide. It is divided into six major categories: Word & Sentence Level; Paragraph Level; Essay & Research Paper Level; Ask Grammar, Quizzes, and Search Devices; Peripheral Devices; GrammarPoll, Guestbook, Awards. The Principles of Composition section is for writers in English composition courses and features handouts on Getting Started, Structure, Tone, Transitions, Editing, Logic, Formats, Rhetorical Patterns, Argumentative Essays, Research Papers, and more. There are also 150+ computer-graded quizzes to test knowledge of grammar and you can submit a question about English usage or grammar. The Guide to Grammar and Writing is sponsored by the Capital Community College Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports scholarships, faculty development, and curriculum innovation.

The English Education Program at Western Michigan University offers this site to support future and current teachers of English language arts associated with Western Michigan University. Internet Public Library: A+ Research and Writing for High School and College Students

The Internet Public Library produces, selects, organizes, describes, and creates resource information and makes it readily accessible for the teacher and student. The IPL provides a step- by- step guide to research & writing: Step 1 - Getting Started - preparing for the assignment and getting ready to choose a topic; Step 2 - Discovering and Choosing a Topic - reading to become informed; Step 3 - Looking for and Forming a Focus - exploring your topic; Step 4 - Gathering Information - which clarifies and supports your focus; Step 5 - Preparing to Write - analyzing and organizing your information and forming a thesis statement; Step 6 - Writing the Paper - writing, revising and finalizing. The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation

You don't have to purchase the Blue Book to use the resources at this site. It explains punctuation, subjects and verbs, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, and outlines specific usage problems such as effect vs. affect. There are plenty of examples and exercises.

Teaching English: Information and Communication Technologies

This page is produced by the Office for Curriculum, Leadership and Learning in Tasmania, Australia and provides an overview of how technology is impacting the teaching of English. Of special interest are the charts: how some emerging technologies can be used in English, examples of English profile outcomes that could be assessed through technology, and some applications and computing software worth trying.

Paradigm Online Writing Assistant

Developed by Professor Chuck Guilford of Boise State University, Paradigm is an interactive, menu-driven, online writer's guide and handbook written in HTML and distributed freely over the WWW. It uses hypertext structure and helps students think about what goes into a writing before they ever start to draft. There are sections on discovering what to write, organizing, revising and editing your writing. Also several types of essays are addressed: thesis/support, argumentative, exploratory, and informal.

Provides free access to thousands of humanities texts and includes the Mark Twain in His Times archive, the Modern English Collection, and British Poetry 1780-1910. The English Online Resources includes 9,575 titles including 203,725 manuscript, book, and newspaper illustrations. Many are publicly accessible but some are limited to the UVA community. Also has Ebooks for Microsoft Reader and an annotated list of CD-Roms.
